It was my birthday recently, so I’ve recorded a bonus episode featuring one of my favourite stories.
Saki, aka Hector Hugh Munro, only occasionally delves into the supernatural in his works. His acidic shorts are predominantly black comedies of manners. Think P.G. Woodhouse but with less whimsy and more malevolence.
His stories are rarely more than a few pages long, yet they include biting commentary on the foibles of the Edwardian upper and middle classes. As you’ll hear in Laura, there is often a bestial nature to his tales. Characters forced into a battle against wild forces that lay waste to their constrained lives. Considering his own upbringing, raised by disciplinarian aunts, it’s hard not to interpret much of his work as vengeful wish fulfilment.
